Scholarships and Financial Aid

Home » Scholarships and Financial Aid

Overview

Students who wish to attend West Virginia University, but anticipate a problem meeting the costs of their education, are encouraged to explore the many available avenues of financial aid. Financial aid is money issued to students for the purpose of meeting expenses related to the completion of an educational program.

Financial aid is available in three basic types: gift aid (grants and scholarships), loans, and employment. Grants are primarily based on need; scholarships are primarily based on academic performance and potential. The WVU Financial Aid Office assists students in all stages of the Financial Aid Process. Visit their home page, or contact them directly at FinAid@wvu.edu. They’re here to help you!

Grant Programs

Like scholarships, grants are gift aid, money which does not need to be repaid. Grants may be awarded to students demonstrating at least average potential for college and financial need. Students are required to exhibit academic progress. Loans are borrowed money which must be repaid usually after college. The most common loans made to college students are Federal Perkins Loans, granted on the basis of financial need with the most deserving applicants receiving first preference, and Federal Direct Stafford Loans, which may be subsidized by the federal government.

Students in certain states may be eligible for a reduction in tuition through the Southern Regional Education Board's Academic Common Market.
